Until 2017, no Dutch-language book by a Congolese historian had ever been published in Flanders. This fact has received remarkable little attention. A majority of the books about the Democratic Republic of Congo that have been translated into Dutch, are not written by Congolese natives. The representation and description of the colonial history is essentially determined by a very homogeneous group of white Belgian men. When it comes to the DRC, one mainly finds travel stories, ( exoticizing) fiction and (pseudo-) scientific works with a Eurocentric view on the ‘Other’ that create false stereotypes through their narratives and related imagery. This inspired us to initiate the project Wanneer we spreken over kolonisatie / Quand on parle de la colonization (2017) which comprises a collaboration with Congolese historians, educated and employed in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It includes essays by Donatien DIBWE dia Mwembu, Sindani KIANGU, Pamphile MABIALA MANTUBA-NGOMA, Jean-Marie MUTAMBA MAKOMBO and Jacob SABAKINU Kivilu. It took almost sixty years after the independence of Congo to publish the very first book written by Congolese historians, educated and employed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Dutch!
